Examination Content Outline

The questions on the examination will be approximately distributed according to the following percentages of content areas. This is an approximation only and may not represent the exact distribution of questions on the examination. All questions on the exam relate to competencies as outlined in the book Geriatric Physical Therapy: Description of Advanced Clinical Practice (DACP), © 1999.

1. Elements of Practice (15%)

  • Communication
  • Individual and Cultural Differences
  • Professional Behavior
  • Critical Inquiry and Clinical Decision Making
  • Education
  • Professional Development
  • Prevention and Wellness
  • Management of Care Delivery Systems
  • Administration (except participate in implementation of marketing plan)
  • Consultation
  • Social Responsibility (except pro-bono care)

2. Examination Skills (30%)

The following areas will encompass 20% of the questions:

  • History
  • Systems Review
  • Arousal, Mentation, and Cognition
  • Assistive and Adaptive Devices
  • Gait, Locomotion, and Balance
  • Joint Integrity and Mobility
  • Motor Function
  • Muscle Performance
  • Range of Motion

The following areas will encompass 10% of the questions:

  • Aerobic Capacity and Endurance
  • Anthropometric Characteristics
  • Community and Work (Job/School/Play) Integration/Reintegration (including instrumental activities of daily living)
  • Environmental, Home, and word (Job/School/Play) Barriers
  • Ergonomics and Body Mechanics
  • Integumentary Integrity
  • Neuromotor Development and Sensory Integration
  • Orthotic, Protective, and Supportive Devices
  • Pain
  • Posture
  • Prosthetic Requirements
  • Reflex Integrity
  • Self-Care and Home-Management Activities (including activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living)
  • Sensory Integration (including proprioception and kinesthesia)
  • Ventilation, Respiration, and Circulation

3. Interventions (30%)

The following areas will encompass 20% of the questions:

  • Coordination, Communication, and Documentation
  • Patient-related Instruction
  • Therapeutic Exercise (including aerobic conditioning)
  • Functional Training in Self-Care and Home Management Activities (including activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living)

The following areas will encompass 10% of the questions

  • Functional Training in Community and Work (Job/School/Play) Integration/Reintegration (including instrumental activities of daily living, work hardening, and work conditioning)
  • Manual Therapy Techniques (including mobilization and manipulation)
  • Prescription, Application, and as Appropriate, Fabrication of Devices and Equipment (assistive, adaptive, orthotic, protective supportive, and prosthetic)
  • Airway Clearance Techniques
  • Wound Management
  • Physical Agents and Mechanical Modalities
